In the summer of 2018, while many of the vegetable crops at Wild Fox Farm & Provisions suffered from excess rain and lack of sunlight, the farm’s one-acre hemp planting provided a valuable economic buffer for its bottom line.
During this farm tour, Wild Fox farmer Ben Davies will discuss the opportunities hemp production provides to farmers, even at small scales. Ben will talk about entering the hemp market, agronomic aspects of growing the crop, and lessons learned after his second year of production.
He’ll also provide a brief overview of seed sourcing and propagation; growing, harvesting, and processing techniques; and marketing.
Wild Fox Farm & Provisions has been fueled by the intimate and relentless devotion of Ben and Karah Davies. With their 2012 purchase of 41 acres in Pennsylvania’s Butter Valley, their vision to see the land enriched and productive has led to continued expansion of Wild Fox’s product offerings, and more land purchases, leases and strategic partnerships. Many local chefs, foodies, and families now rely on the farm for year-round sustenance. As the land is regenerated, so are the lives of the community that it supports.
