Avoid scams: We’ve been notified of an attempted fake check scam. If you are selling something and an individual mails you a check in an amount that is significantly more than what you are asking—then requests that you direct the additional funds to a third party—this is a scam. Do not deposit the check (it is fake) nor send money to a third party.

In any sale or purchase from a classified ad, don’t ignore red flags like unusual requests or an unwillingness to answer basic questions. Meet in person if you can to pay or receive payment in a safe, public place.
