Pasa has always taken an inclusive approach to defining sustainability.

Making ecologically conscious decisions looks different for every farm and every farmer. For some it means reducing tillage, for others it’s obtaining organic certification. For some it means planting trees, for others it’s writing a business plan that balances people, profit, and planet.

Our community understands that stewarding our land, water, and air, is only part of the equation. For agriculture to truly sustain us, everyone needs access to affordable, nourishing food. The people who grow, raise, and harvest food need to be able to earn a living and be treated with dignity. And anyone who wants to farm needs access to land and resources to do so.

This is what sustainable agriculture means to us:

  • • Working in harmony with nature
  • • Improving soil health
  • • Increasing biodiversity
  • • Reducing inputs
  • • Storing carbon
  • • Expanding the urban tree canopy
  • • Protecting waterways
  • Prioritizing animal welfare and human wellbeing
  • • Incorporating renewable energy
  • • Preserving farmland
  • • Finding alternatives to plastic and single use materials

  • • Increasing financial viability of farms
  • • Growing the farmer workforce
  • • Improving labor conditions, compensation, and staff retention
  • • Reducing waste
  • • Sharing resources
  • • Advancing racial equity
  • • Growing local economies
  • • Collaborating with other businesses
  • • Feeding your neighbors
  • • Preserving cultures
  • • Building community
