Webinar Record Keeping for Soil Health

How can better record-keeping help you improve soil health?

Record-keeping can be daunting for busy farms and farmers, but getting in the habit of tracking your field management practices can make it easier to improve your soil health. Get some tips and best practices from farmers who participate in our Soil Health Benchmark Study.

This session will focus on records associated with the Soil Health Benchmark Study, but will also be relevant for those interested in applying for organic certification.

The Soil Health Benchmark Study is designed to help farmers monitor and evaluate the nuanced soil health strengths and challenges that can exist simultaneously within their fields. The study was developed and is administered by Pasa Sustainable Agriculture in collaboration with farmers and partners including the Cornell Soil Health Testing Laboratory, Future Harvest and the Million Acre Challenge, Penn State Extension, Rodale Institute, and Stroud Water Research Center.

Speakers

Carrie Vaughn is the vegetable production manager at Clagett Farm where she has run field operations, farmworker training, and customer engagement for over 20 years. Carrie enrolled Clagett Farm in the Million Acre Challenge’s Soil Health Benchmark Study and is gracious enough to share her hard-earned insights on how to practically and successfully approach soil health record-keeping on an active and busy farm.

Mike Krug is the co-owner and co-operator of Fullers Overlook Farm, a diversified vegetable, herb, cut flower, and pastured livestock farm located in PA. Mike enrolled Fullers Overlook Farm in Pasa’s Soil Health Benchmark Study and has the reputation for turning in really thorough records in a timely fashion so we know he’ll have great tips to share with us too!

Lisa Garfield is the Million Acre Challenge Manager for Future Harvest, a soil scientist, and former vegetable farmer. She coordinates the Soil Health Benchmark Study participants in Maryland and recently developed a Soil Health Management Plan soon to be shared with farmers in the Chesapeake region.
