Enhancing Silvopasture Applications with Cattle and Charcoal
Friday, July 12th @ 1:30 PM EDT
~ with Gary Gilmore, PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry
Does charcoal enhance animal health in a rotational grazing system?
As much as 90% of the biochar produced in Europe is used in livestock farming, where it is mixed with feed, added to litter, or used in the treatment of slurry. Researchers there report that these additions of biochar measurably and quickly improve the health – and consequently the well-being of livestock. Biochar is also used to mitigate barnyard odors and nutrient loss by closing agricultural cycles of organic matter. Gary Gilmore is a regionally well-known, avid producer, integrator, and advocate of biochar. He will present findings by agricultural researchers as well as his observations from his own farm, fields and forest.
