George Brittenburg owns and operates Taproot Farm with his wife, Ola Creston. Taproot Farm is a 200-acre organic diversified vegetable farm that also raises livestock and laying hens on pasture. Taproot sells its produce through its CSA program, wholesale outlets that serve the local region, and a farmers market in Philadelphia. George and Ola are first-generation farmers who founded Taproot Farm in 2009 on five acres of rented land. They are passionate about building the local food system and promoting organic farming to protect the environment and build healthier communities. George and Ola also deeply value the cultural exchange of working with farmers from Mexico as part of their farm crew and believe strongly that the contributions of migrant and local workers are an integral part of this country’s agriculture.
Since attending his first Pasa conference in 2008, George has been an ardent supporter of the organization’s work. He believes the culture of openness and sharing among fellow farmers that Pasa nurtures is key to training future farmers and continuing the work of building a sustainable local food system. George has also found Pasa’s educational programs to be integral to his journey as a farmer.
