Event Description
Backwoods Organic Dairy is a spring-calving, seasonal, 60-cow, cross-bred herd on 100 acres of pasture, and 300 acres of hay. After 7 years of operation, in 2018, the farm will be attempting to transition its certified organic herd to a 100% grass diet. Join us for this spring pasture walk, where we will focus on forage quality in the grazing paddocks and hay fields, including identification and discussion of various grass, legume, and forb species, and what they can bring to the animals’ diet and health. Some discussion regarding higher-energy, summer annual forages may be included, as well, as farmer Mike Geiser strategizes how to keep good energy in his milking herd, through the summer slump. This is a good walk for graziers looking to optimize their pastures, and gain exposure to a farm transitioning into a grass-fed management system.
Speaker Information
Mike Geiser is the owner/operator of Backwoods Organic Dairy, a certified organic farm that began milking cows in 2010. The farm is 100 acres of rotationally managed grazing pasture, complemented by an additional 300 acres of hay ground. In 2018, the farm is looking to transition the 60 cow, cross-bred milking herd to an all-grass diet.
