Event Description
Learn the hows and whys of pruning, and bring your questions to this informative event at North Star Orchard.

Caring for fruit trees means that you also have to prune them. But how do you know what to cut off? If you have a backyard orchard (or just a tree or two) and want to brush up on your pruning skills, come out to the farm to learn the basics from resident expert, Farmer Ike. Come with your questions!

Ike will be giving demonstrations on how (and why) to make those crucial cutting decisions on apple, pear, peach, and plum trees, as well as grapevines.

Attendees will receive a handout of resources including a list of tools and where to buy them as well as organizations and books you can turn to for further reference.

This Field Day is suitable for interested adults and teens (children will likely be bored). You need not be a fruit grower to enjoy this session, but if you are, it’ll be mighty helpful for your backyard fruit-growing efforts!

We’ll be indoors for a little bit, but mostly we’ll be outdoors and hiking all around the 20-acre farm. Plan to dress appropriately for the weather (layers, boots, etc.)
Speaker & Host Information
North Star Orchard is a 20-acre orchard and vegetable farm located in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. Their produce is all sold directly to the people who eat it at local farmers' markets and though their CSA, which is available at pickup locations throughout Southeastern PA and Delaware.

North Star Orchard farm owner/operator Ike Kershner grew up gardening, and at a young age was selling his vegetables at a tailgate market near his home. As a teen, he worked for a small local orchard that grew dwarf trellised trees. That experience inspired his goal to have his own orchard someday.

Ike graduated from Penn State and has become well known in this area for his expertise in growing vinifera wine grapes on innovative trellis systems and for his knowledge and experience growing and breeding unique fruits and vegetables. He has taught classes at Longwood Gardens, and is a speaker at various seminars and conferences. He has hosted several large grower meetings at the farm.

Ike spends his "leisure" time reading, cooking, and learning more about the fruit and vegetable growing industry. His "hobby" is developing new varieties of fruits and vegetables - they are his babies!

From fellow orchardist Ed Fackler: "You're the only person I've ever met who had apples shooting out of your fingertips like fireballs."
