Integrated Pest Management for the Organic Grower

The majority of insects that surround us in the garden (and out) are either beneficial or harmless to human endeavors. Learning to identify the common insects in your area is an essential skill in the gardener’s toolbox. Only then can you begin to recognize and support the beneficial insects that are making your job easier and mitigate and prevent the damage from their less helpful counterparts. We will cover the three major kinds of pest management, how to diagnose a pest problem, and recommended treatments. This workshop will be primarily classroom based and we’ll examine some live examples and do a field walk if possible.

About the Instructors:

Jason Reed is an ecologist recently transplanted from Baltimore City. He is currently hard at work pioneering organic hydroponics and urban soil conservation, and is a garden and agriculture educator with a taste for the joy and the daring of growing and foraging food. He and his wife (a social worker) are currently working to develop new resources for local growers, based on wisdom handed down to us from other cultures. Jason lives just outside of Stewartstown, with a motley crew of goats, chickens, hogs, dogs, cows, cats and turkeys.

Jonathan Darby is a wild foods enthusiast and educator, former owner and operator of Sterling Farm, and has been active in the local farming community for the past twelve years. Jonathan has been involved at the Horn Farm since 2008 when he volunteered on the committee that developed the Incubator Farm Project. Jonathan received his Permaculture Design Certification in 2011 from Susquehanna Permaculture and in 2014 completed his Permaculture Teacher Training through Dynamic Ecological Design. On January 1, 2016, Jonathan Darby was promoted to Education Director at the Horn Farm Center for Ag
