Identifying Financial Benchmarks for Vegetable Farms

Direct-market vegetable sales at farmers markets, CSAs, on-site farm stands, and other outlets are an $86 million industry in Pennsylvania. Yet, little information is available to guide vegetable farmers in making successful financial decisions.

This workshop will help vegetable farmers chart a course for improving profits by participating in our Diversified Vegetable Financial Benchmark Study.

Through this study, we’re helping vegetable farmers improve their bottom line by plugging into a nationwide research project, coordinated by the University of Wisconsin, to determine financial benchmarks for diversified vegetable farmers. Financial benchmarks can provide farmers with a more accurate idea of the typical returns they can expect from different sales outlets.

  • During the workshop farmers will complete a detailed survey about their farm business finances. After the workshop, we’ll use the reported information to provide attendees with personalized information about how their finances compare to farms across Pennsylvania and the U.S.
  • We’ll also share highlights and lessons learned from this ongoing study. Farmers who have previously participated in this study are invited to stay for an in-depth, peer-to-peer discussion of the findings to date.

All participants are eligible for a $100 stipend for completing the study. To qualify, participants must prepare basic financial records from 2017 before the workshop.

If you’d like to attend this workshop, please register in advance by Thursday, January 3rd. You’ll be given a list of financial information to prepare before the workshop, including a 2017 Schedule F tax return, 2017 Profit and Loss Statement, and a current list of farm assets and their estimated value.

Additional information

  • This event qualifies for one SmartStart credit through AgChoice Farm Credit. SmartStart allows young and beginning farmers to earn credits toward a reduced interest rate on a new AgChoice loan by attending educational events.
  • General results from this study will be shared publicly, but your farm’s specific data will be kept confidential.
