Virtual Work Session Benchmark Your Vegetable Farm Finances

Share and compare your financial data with other farms to improve your bottom line.

Do you own or operate a for-profit diversified vegetable farm and use direct marketing to sell at least some of your produce at farmers markets, farm stands, or through CSAs? Want access to data from similar operations to help you make informed financial decisions?

Attend one of our virtual work sessions to participate in our Diversified Vegetable Financial Benchmark Study! During the session, you’ll complete a detailed financial survey (takes approximately 90 minutes to complete) based on your vegetable farm’s 2020 financial records. We’ll also share direct-market financial insights gleaned from previous years. These work sessions are suitable for both first-time study participants and farmers who have participated in previous years.

We’ll crunch the numbers and compile personalized financial benchmark reports for each study participant. Your custom report will show you how your farm finances compare to all other study participants across the Mid-Atlantic region, and will help you identify opportunities for improving your bottom line. General results from this study will be shared publicly, but your farm’s specific data will be kept confidential.

All participants are eligible for a $100 stipend for completing the study.

Work session schedule

Click here for the full schedule of financial benchmarking virtual work sessions.

To be eligible to participate in this study, you must:

  • Own or operate a for-profit, diversified vegetable operation that direct markets at least some of your produce
  • Prepare the following 2020 financial records ahead of time and have on hand for the session:
    • A chart of accounts
    • Schedule F tax return or comparable document
    • Profit and Loss Statement, or similar document
    • A current list of farm assets (land, buildings, equipment) and their estimated value

Here’s what some current and past study participants had to say:

  • “Before this, we had no basis for comparison to help determine if we were fairly successful relative to other farms or how much is reasonable to expect to make.”
  • “Peer-to-peer comparisons are valuable but difficult to find. This study is the only way to achieve it. Thank you.”
  • “Motivated me to keep better records and critically analyze revenue streams and expenses.”
