Seasonal Field Assistant
Status: $17/hour; Full-Time Hourly (non-exempt) May-September with potential extension
Reports to: Agriculture Program Director

OUR MISSON: The Chester County Food Bank seeks to create a food secure Chester County. We mobilize our community to ensure access to real, healthy food. Chester County Food Bank (CCFB) is a countywide, non-profit organization located in Exton, PA and has been in existence since 2009. CCFB works with over 150 agency partners to distribute over 3 million pounds of food annually to 10% of Chester County residents. We provide educational opportunities through programs like Eat Fresh, Fresh2You Mobile Market and Seed to Supper to engage the community in hands on learning experiences.

CCFB manages several field sites in central Chester County, Pa. CCFB also manages two greenhouses, providing approximately 200,000 seedlings for our farm fields and Raised Bed Garden Program. In 2021, CCFB grew approximately 100,000 pounds of mixed vegetables. Our produce is distributed to affiliated food relief agencies and utilized by our mobile market truck, commercial kitchen, and nutrition education program.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Seasonal Field Assistant works with and reports to the Agriculture Program Director on day-to-day field operations and greenhouse production. They will work collaboratively with the Field Manager to assess needs, meet labor demands, and ensure the successful production of various crops. This position will require independent supervision of volunteers to achieve high levels of productivity and personal engagement. This position is an excellent opportunity to deepen knowledge, skills, and experience in diversified vegetable production.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

• Field labor: planting, weeding, thinning, cultivating, harvesting, washing, packing
• Warehouse labor: Washing bins and processing produce as needed
• Greenhouse propagation and maintenance
• Survey fields and greenhouses for pests and disease
• Work with volunteers of many ages, abilities, and backgrounds to complete above tasks.
• Assist other staff with various projects and work-related errands as needed
• CCFB work vehicles may occasionally be provided for the transport of produce or other materials to and from the farm

Due to the nature of the CCFB programs and services, it is essential that staff be able to perform their essential job functions and consistently meet the qualifications and physical requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
• High School diploma or equivalent required
• One year of farming or a background in gardening or farming preferred
• Ability to lift 40+ pounds
• Basic Forklift Certification required (provided by Food Bank).
• Basic knowledge of a computer, laptop, or other electronic device.
• Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.
• Ability to verbally communicate in English with all employees, volunteers, and others to exchange information, instructions, and ideas.
• Must be able to read typed or handwritten notes, forms, and other work materials.
• This position is highly mobile and requires a clean driving record. Reliable personal transportation is required as public transportation is not available.
• This position involves interactions with youth and requires the completion of child abuse clearances and a background check

This is a full-time hourly (non-exempt) position. Occasionally, it will require weekend work. A maximum of 40 hours per week is required. Position runs May through September 30th with the possibility of an extension

This position is primarily outside and requires working in cold, hot, wet, and dusty conditions. Throughout the year temperatures below 60 and above 80 are part of the work environment.

• Ability to lift, adjust, push, pull, carry, slide, and move objects weighing 40+ pounds repeatedly and frequently in all directions.
• Ability to use and operate a forklift and electric pallet jack to move heavier objects.
• Ability to bend, stretch, twist, squat, and reach in all directions for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours a day.
• Moving self in various positions to accomplish tasks
• Other movements required from time to time may include, but are limited to: Stopping, kneeling, stepping, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motion of hand, fingers, and wrists.
• Able to support own body weight standing, kneeling, sitting, and walking for long periods of time on flat and uneven ground.
• Must have excellent hearing and vision for emergency situations.
