The Namchak Retreat Ranch is located near the town of Hot Springs, Montana, on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Currently under construction, the ranch will host teachers and students coming together for longer retreats, learning, meditation, and practice in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The Namchak Retreat Ranch is also home to several permaculture systems and is dedicated to providing healthy organic produce for our guests in a regenerative way. Beyond handling all aspects of our guests’ needs we are developing value-added products in alignment with our organization’s ethics while working with local co-ops to provide quality and unique produce to Montana’s communities.
Reports to: Permaculture Program Coordinator
Schedule: 40 hours / week; 52 weeks / year
Compensation: $24 per hour
General Position Description
The Permaculture Program Assistant will play a significant support role in the overall farming operation of the Namchak Retreat Ranch. The main goal of this position is to support the Permaculture Program Coordinator in all of the various projects happening on the ranch. We are looking for a highly self-motivated individual willing to be flexible in weekly tasks.
Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):
Assist in all aspects of the permaculture program
Responsible for native and non-native plant propagation
Responsible for seed collection
Responsible for the animal husbandry program (rotation of chicken tractor, temporarily fencing turkeys into specific areas)
Responsible for monitoring the food forest systems
Support the Permaculture Program Coordinator in the implementation of food forest systems
Weeding and weed control
Perform pest management tasks
Compost tea fertilized prep and application
General mucking out of animal stalls
Watering new plantings
Pruning, mulching, grafting, and harvesting
Assist in landscape implementation as new buildings are constructed
Previous permaculture experience
Knowledge of research methodologies
Knowledge and interest in ecology, permaculture operations, and agricultural processes.
Knowledge of Montana’s ecology – with an emphasis on plant communities
2-3 years of work experience in the agricultural/food production industries
Strong foundational knowledge of horticulture
Strong decision-making skills
History of being able to work well on a team
Able to lift 50 – 100 lbs.
High school diploma or equivalent
Efficient organizational skills
Excellent teamwork skill
Heavy machinery operation (skid steers, excavators, tractors)
Prior experience with organic farming
Knowledge of correct pruning methods
Knowledge of Montana’s invasive weeds
