Position Overview:

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) plays an essential role in the vitality of the Philadelphia region by creating healthier living environments, increasing access to fresh food, growing economic opportunity, and building deeper social connections between people. PHS Healthy Neighborhoods team delivers this impact through comprehensive greening and engagement initiatives in more than 250 neighborhoods. Together with community partners, PHS carefully designs projects that build on neighborhood strengths and aspirations to use greening to improve the environment, health and quality of life in their communities. PHS supports community gardeners with educational workshops, gardening supplies and materials, seedlings, access to the PHS tool library, technical assistance, volunteer assistance, and infrastructure improvements. The PHS Green Resource Center at Norristown Farm Park features 3 acres of production land and orchard, greenhouse, pavilion and community garden beds, the PHS Green Resource Center is an educational and production hub meant to support gardeners and growers across the region.

The Farm Assistant will work closely with the Farm Manager and play a key support role to all operations of the PHS Green Resource Center at Norristown Farm Park. The Farm Assistant will work both independently and as part of the farm team in the execution of farm production, seedling propagation and distribution, educational opportunities for public, volunteer workdays, and site maintenance. Additionally, the Farm Assistant will help the Farm Manager with leading seasonal interns who will assist with activities on the farm.

Primary Responsibilities:

Helps with and/or leads execution of daily farm tasks including seeding, planting, pruning, trellising, pest/disease management, weeding, watering, harvesting, washing, packing and distribution of food to community partners.
Supports Farm Manager with record keeping, as well as tool and machine maintenance.
Supports Farm Manager with general maintenance and upkeep of GRC, which may include mowing, repairs and more. Assesses daily needs of the farm and assists in creating action plans and activities.
Assists with greenhouse production plan, seeding, potting up of seedlings for distribution and farm use, and with material distribution to community partners including salt hay, seedlings and more.
Supports Farm Manager with leading volunteer workdays to support farm production- harvest & pack days, planting days, seeding/potting up days, etc.
Assists Farm Manager in training and leading seasonal interns who support with all operations of the GRC.
Ensures that all activities are inclusive and welcoming to people of various backgrounds, ages, skill levels, and capabilities.
As needed, provided general support to the entire Community Gardens Team such as participation in seasonal seedling distributions and workdays.


Minimum degree required: N/A
Years of experience: At least two years (2 seasons) of experience in organic vegetable production
Licenses/Certifications: N/A
Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license and clean, safe driving record required
Knowledges, Skills, Abilities required for success:
Knowledge of organic agriculture especially low to no-till techniques, IPM and other agroecological practices.
Experience with or willingness to work with power tools and machinery (tractor, BCS, weedwhacker, mowers, etc.).
Interest in and commitment to food justice, local food systems and community-based health initiatives.
Interest in community engagement and volunteer management.
Ability to take initiative and work cooperatively on a team of peers.
Detail-oriented, with considerable attention to order and cleanliness on the farm.
Good communication and leadership skills.
Ability to follow direct, be conforming with giving and receiving regular feedback and able to quickly adapt to changes for a variety of tasks.
Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Physical Demands:
Ability to lift and move 50lbs comfortably.
Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions.

Standard Hours (including travel, evening, and weekend hours):
Ability to work independently and collaboratively under variable conditions including early mornings, some weekends, and evenings and in all weather conditions.
