We are growing! Two Gander Farm is a 20-acre family-operated produce farm on a scenic 260-acre preserve in Downingtown, PA. We grow and distribute a diverse selection of exceptional-quality USDA Certified Organic vegetables, herbs, berries, and flowers for our surrounding communities, including our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members, farmers markets, local restaurants, and retailers. As we enter our 18th season of production, Two Gander Farm will maintain and improve our sustainable farming practices with a focus on strengthening our community ties, creating new partnerships, and continuing to turn out gorgeous produce with respect for our local environment. About the Role:
Two Gander Farm is seeking an organized, reliable, and collaborative Packhouse Associate to join our team and support a critical component of our operations. The Packhouse Associate will assist the vital post-harvest process of sorting, grading, packing, and preparing fresh produce for distribution, ensuring quality, food safety, and efficient operations, from harvest to shipment, bridging farm production with market demands. This is an associate role with the expectation of year-round (non-seasonal) full-time employment.
Responsibilities:
- With the support of the Management team and farm crew , you will execute:
- Processing and Packaging (packhouse procedures, organization, routine tasking): Ensure daily/weekly/monthly packhouse routines are conducted efficiently and with care for storage, washing, and packaging of produce. Maintain awareness of and adhere to produce quality standards as well as the schedules and demands of the farm as a whole
- CSA: Work closely with the Distribution Manager to ensure smooth operation of the CSA throughout the growing season
- Wholesale product agreements: Assist with packing and delivery of wholesale orders to various farm accounts while adhering to the highest standards for quality
- Other responsibilities include:
- Work closely with our Distribution Manager, Harvest Manager, Farm Owner (Trey), Two Gander team, and our members and partners to implement the farm’s goals and targets for the year
- Assist in recordkeeping for the packhouse segment of Two Gander Farm including keeping accurate harvest, sanitation and safety records
- Participate in harvesting during off season (January-April) for farm distribution to wholesale accounts and farmers market
- Communicate packhouse supply inventory needs to the Packhouse Manager
- Assist with on farm and off farm markets and events during weekends as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Previous farming experience with ability to routinely lift/transport up to 50 lbs and work in outdoor weather conditions
- We are looking for at least a year-long commitment for this role. There is always opportunity for growth in other areas of the farm as well. We have a seasoned staff at Two Gander and are looking for someone to fill out our team and grow with us for multiple seasons
- Working knowledge of farm post-production/distribution in the areas listed above: Processing and Packaging, CSA, and Wholesale
- Interpersonal communication: Able to communicate effectively with team members across Two Gander Farm
- Written communication: Willing to learn and perform distribution recordkeeping and follow distribution procedures
- Organization and reliability: Help meet Two Gander Farm’s goals for the season by ensuring post-production practices run smoothly, our CSA members and wholesale partners are satisfied, and connection to our community is strong
- Possess reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record. Local deliveries may require driving the farm’s sprinter van
- Demonstrate a passion for farming, community support and growth.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with commonly-used software such as Google productivity tools
- Willingness to learn and be trained in other areas of the farm, including crop assessment, harvest availability, creating harvest lists for the harvest crew, and filling in for the Packhouse Manager if needed. There are also plenty of opportunities to be involved in special projects around the farm, like trellising tunnel tomatoes, seeding and potting up in the greenhouse, and many others
- We have a harvest crew that comes from Peru every year that speaks English as their second language. Intermediate Spanish would be a great quality for a candidate to have, but it is not necessary. A willingness to have good communication with workers with English as their second language is required. If you do not speak any Spanish, please still apply!
Term: Annual/year-round. Daily hours are flexible between growing season (May-Dec) and off season (Dec-May).
Compensation: $16-$18/hour
