$21-$27/hour Wingdale, NY job
Phone Number: 845-218-1565
Harlem Valley Homestead is a hospitality-focused, diversified vegetable, flower and livestock farm on 250 acres in Wingdale, NY. Our mission is to deepen our connections to place, to each other, and to ourselves, through hands-on learning and experience in rural and agrarian living. We raise beef cattle, layer chickens, feeder pigs, vegetables, fruit, cut flowers, mushrooms, and a modest apiary. While we are not certified, we adhere to organic practices. In the future, we intend to build accommodations to host overnight guests, with on-site dining, events and workshops.
Currently, we maintain 50 acres in pasture, 1.5 acres of intensive crop production, and 3 acres in cover crop for future production as a working farm. The rest of our property consists of ponds, woods and wetlands, and is nestled between the Ten Mile River, Ten Mile Hill and Gardner Hill. We are five minutes from Metro North (Harlem Valley Wingdale), with lots of fishing, swimming and hiking in the area.
We are looking for someone to lead our crop production. All of our existing annual production is on a small but intensive scale in our 1.5 acre market garden, though we have a larger field in cover crop to reduce weeds and build fertility. We have an unheated 3000 square foot movable greenhouse, and a 3000 square foot permanent heated greenhouse that we also use for propagation and wash/pack. Beds are prepared and turned over with a combination of tractor, BCS and hand tools, and all other field work is by hand (often with hand tools). We focus on improving soil health through the use of cover cropping, compost and other amendments, and reducing tillage and soil inversion.
In addition to day to day field and administrative responsibilities, there may be additional opportunities to research new enterprises, develop educational/sales resources, and support/lead other projects such as land management, perennial plantings, variety trials, etc. While our existing production supports our sales channels like our farmers market and farm stand, there is a lot of room for growth in the future as we grow and expand our farm operations to support extensive hospitality, culinary and guest programming onsite.
While this position will be primarily focused on vegetable production, we are a small team running a very diversified farm and this person will also need to jump in and provide support across other areas of the operation when needed, whether it’s giving a farm tour to a group of visitors or helping take care of our livestock, perennials, or other areas of operation.
Previous farming experience is required. Experience with equipment operation and maintenance is preferred.
Specific roles and responsibilities will include the following for crop production:

*Reviewing sales records to inform production and harvest as needed
*Maintaining inventories of crop production supplies
-Supporting other areas of operation as needed, such as livestock operations and land management
-Researching/supporting new production methods to improve soil health, yields, biodiversity, erosion, etc.
-Additional duties may be assigned as this person gains experience and capacity
-Supporting development of farm SOPs
-2+ years of farming experience
-Self starter and organized- ability to self manage and transition quickly to new tasks
-Confidence and ability to manage, educate and/or work alongside others
