Over the past three years, our family has worked to build Upstream Farmstead – a small, direct to consumer pastured meat farm. A work opportunity is taking us out of the area and we are seeking a family, couple, or individual to take over the business and utilize the infrastructure we have worked to build over the past few years.

The Home: 4BR, 2 BA farmhouse with 3 outdoor decks. The home has some rustic charm and has been thoughtfully updated throughout (vinyl windows, metal roof, new appliances, electric boiler). The home boasts 45 solar panels (installed in 2013) that offset some of the annual electric costs.

The Barn: A 4 stall horse barn with a large hay loft and separate space for an on-farm store. The barn has new 200 amp electric service and a frost free water hydrant. The space for a farm store is about 14’x32′ and has a concrete floor, windows, and a large countertop with sink. The barn also has an outdoor 10’x12′ walk in freezer next to it on a dedicated concrete pad that holds meat inventory.

The Land: The property comes with 5.35 acres owned and a lease on an adjoining 30 acres (15 of which is pasture, the rest is wooded). The yard for the home is approx. 1 acre and hosts a small pond frequented by a Great Blue Heron. There is a small raspberry patch, a newly planted strawberry patch, and many locust, hemlock, and black walnut trees. On the two acre “upper field” we recently planted a silvopasture including 100 black locust and 100 sugar maple trees and in our lower field we have 50 paw paw trees, 30 or so chestnut saplings, and a few apple and peach trees getting their start. All new trees are in 5′ tree tubes with bird netting.

Farm Infrastructure: We have modeled our farming equipment after successful pasture based meat farms and so all of our infrastructure is mobile. We have a 4 horse livestock trailer that has been converted into a egg-mobile for hens, 3 salatin-style chicken tractors, a porta-hut for pigs, and a large number of Premier One netting and solar fence energizers for chickens and turkeys, pigs, and cows.

Farm Inventory: We have a season’s worth of organic fed chicken, pork, turkey, and 100% grassfed beef inventory in the freezer. This could be included at an additional cost.

Farm Market spaces: We have a spot at the Danville Growers Market and keep a freezer full of meat at the Farm at Catawissa Creek’s bi-weekly market and have developed a relationship with a local brewery to supply chicken.

We are hoping to sell the property to a family, couple or individual that would continue stewarding the land in a responsible way. The business is young, so will not be valued highly in the price. The price reflects the value of the real estate only, but we are hoping that the purchaser will have a dream to maintain a homestead or farmstead.
