Coverdale Farm Preserve is seeking Farm Assistants for March-November 2023!
As a part of the larger Delaware Nature Society, Coverdale Farm strives to model regenerative agriculture with an emphasis on environmental stewardship, education, outreach, and advocacy. The Farm Assistant is an interdisciplinary role which will assist in Coverdale’s mission and all of our core enterprises, including our 7-acre diversified vegetable production garden, 1.5-acre flower, herb, and vegetable Pick-Your-Own garden, laying-hen flock, ruminant pasture grazing program, on-site retail market, and numerous public engagement and educational programming opportunities. Over the course of the season, farm assistants will engage in considerable hands-on work in the field of regenerative agriculture and will leave with a solid foundation for continuing a career in agriculture and environmental stewardship.

Farm Assistants at Coverdale can expect to work in all of the following areas:
Diversified Vegetable Production Garden
-All day-to-day tasks related to plant care and maintenance in Coverdale’s 7-acre vegetable garden, including seeding, planting/transplanting, pruning, trellising, weeding/hoeing, irrigation management, and monitoring crops for pest and disease pressure.
-Harvesting, washing, and packing of produce.
-Greenhouse work, including sowing of vegetable, flower, and herb seeds, monitoring and watering seedlings, monitoring seedling temperature and light needs, and potting-up seedlings.
-Supplying the local community with fresh produce, including our on-site market, (open April-December), two local grocery stores and 5-6 local restaurants.
-continuously utilizing and bettering our regenerative agricultural practices, including low/no-till, permanent raised beds, continuous soil cover, crop rotation, no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides.

Livestock Care
-assist in the care of our 150-laying-hen flock including feeding, watering, moving of mobile coops, and collecting, washing, and packing eggs. Aid in the expansion of layer flock.
-assist in the care of seasonal Thanksgiving turkey flock.
-assist in the care several goats, sheep, and cows as part of Coverdale’s pasture management/grazing program.

Pick-Your-Own Flower, Herb, and Vegetable Garden
-Manage the Pick-Your-Own booth during weekend market hours and aid customers and answer questions.
-Perform maintenance tasks in the Pick-Your-Own garden such as dead-heading flowers, maintenance harvests of excess vegetables, pruning and trellising cherry tomatoes & snap peas, sweeping debris from aisles, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment, etc.
-engaging the public in a friendly and professional manner.

On-Site Retail Market
-stocking vegetables in market during weekend vegetable production shifts.
-educate market staff/customers on weekly produce offerings.

Misc.
-give farm tours on a rotational schedule.
-give farm tours to summer camps and other programming groups.
-assist with other programs put on at Coverdale farm.

$13-$16/hr., dependending on experience, 40 hr./week March-November; limited on-site housing available.
