Pennypack Farm & Education Center (PFEC) is now accepting applications for its 18-Month Farm Apprenticeship Program. Founded in 2003, PFEC is a 350+ member Summer CSA and 160 member Winter CSA, operating in Horsham, Montgomery County, PA.
The Farm Apprenticeship Program is designed to provide the necessary training to those wishing to pursue organic/sustainable farming as a livelihood.
Ideal candidates have at least one season of farming experience and have the desire to acquire the necessary skills and experience to pursue a long-term career in organic farming. Apprentices must be comfortable working long hours (approximately 55-60 hrs per week in peak season) in all types of weather. Weekend duties are expected. Candidates must have reliable transportation and a driver’s license.
We have designed our program to incorporate all aspects of a farming operation from crop planning, planting, growing and harvesting crops to selling and marketing to business planning. Candidates should be willing to learn and participate in tractor operation.
Apprenticeships begin in March of the first year (March 2019) and finish 18 months later in November of the following year (November 2020). It is our goal that by experiencing 2 summer seasons and 1 winter season that apprentices will be exposed to all aspects of organic farming and be involved in the decision making that goes into running a successful farm.
Compensation for Apprentices includes a monthly stipend of $1,400 in year one and $1,700 in year two, seasonal produce, $125 gear allowance, 18% of farmer’s market sales, on-the-job training and educational courses that take place on- and off-site through our partner organizations.
