Claire Orner stewards Quiet Creek Herb Farm & School of Country Living, a 30-acre nonprofit educational center committed to teaching sustainability for the past 19 years, along with husband Rusty, and sons Walker and Ashton.

In northwestern PA or globally, in Jamaica, France and Guatemala, the Orners focus on sharing their passion of sustainable living. They offer year-round educational classes on topics including Integrated Pest Management (IPM), mushroom cultivation, vermicomposting, the soil-food web, earthen building, medicinal use of herbs, soap making classes and much more.

In addition, they sustain the next generation through a year-round apprenticeship program and junior internship opportunities. A past apprentice shared “I came to Quiet Creek with a desire to participate in an entire growing season on a small organic farm. Almost immediately, I was given trust, responsibility, resources and encouragement. Rusty and Claire are both amazing teachers that understand it is better to teach through hands-on experience.”

Claire was appointed by the board in 2015 to complete an unfinished term. Presently, she serves as Chair for the Program and Educational Advisory Committees. Claire is also a member of the Executive Committee.

Claire echoes her son Walker’s words from his 2015 Farming for the Future conference speech, where he accepted the Sustainable Ag Business Leadership Award on behalf of Quiet Creek by challenging all: “We are making the change that is needed. PASA has given us this seed and we need to do something with it. For if not us, who? If not now, when?
