On-Farm Pastured Poultry Processing and Rotational Grazing Livestock
Date: Saturday,
September 27
Time: 10am – 3pm
Location: Henry Family Farms, Bessemer, Lawrence
County
Our day at Henry Family Farms will include a tour of the laying
hen operation: how to get started, building an egg-mobile, food,
water and egg management. We'll also cover the basics of the broiler
operation: brood buildings, equipment and pens, pasture and nutrient
management and troubleshooting. Finally, with help from Kim Miller
and friends, Eli Reiff will demonstrate the mobile poultry processing
unit. Participants will have the chance, if inclined, to practice
butchering. Also on the agenda will be a look at the Henrys’
rotational grazing plan for pigs and goats designed by Project Grass.
Stick around to enjoy an heirloom tomato tasting.
A working dairy farm for over seventy years, Henry Family Farms
made the monumental shift to primarily pastured poultry. Someone
told Maggie that chickens were as easily managed as cats, and soon
she had broilers, layers, and turkeys. Come see the hoop coops,
scavenged Salatin-style pens, and the brand new 12’ x 16’
egg-mobile.
A Fertrell representative will be on hand to discuss options for
animal health and soil remediation.
