Miniature Nubians and Goats' Milk Skin Care Products
Date: Friday,
September 12
Time: 10am – 3pm
Location: Spotted
Hill Farm, Pottstown, Montgomery County
Participants will learn
the basics of operating a small goat dairy. Learn why the Howards
chose the miniature Nubian breed and discuss management practices
using pasture and browse. The Howards will share what they have
learned in creating a farm business fit for their retirement years:
how to plan for savings and how to establish manageable farm work
to enable part-time off-farm jobs. Learn about basic milking technique
and see a demo of soapmaking and other products offering insight
into basic recipes, packaging and marketing ideas. You will leave
with your own bar of soap.
Suburbanites for decades, Donna and Larry Howard were 51 when they
purchased their 14-acre farm. A former Christmas tree farm, the
woods are being re-claimed (with help from the goats) to build forest
diversity and health. The Howards are committed to building a successful
farm business to take them through retirement. They have a herd
of 28 miniature Nubians and are making value-added goats’
milk skin-care products to sell at four area farmers’ markets
with plans to sell wholesale and via their website.
