Biocontrols in the Greenhouse on a Diverse Vegetable Farm

Date: Thursday, June 26
Time: 10:00am – 3:00pm (includes lunch)
Location: Lambert Mountain Acres, Cairnbrook, SOMERSET County

Come tour the Lambert's highly productive fruit and vegetable farm. In the greenhouse, Gary will highlight the nearly year-round garlic production, as well as their use of raised beds including: soil preparations and amendments, heating and irrigation systems, and harvesting procedures. Learn about their use of IPM techniques and hear about the ladybug as biocontrol project he'll try in the greenhouse this winter. Tom Ford, Blair County Extension Director, will discuss different IPM philosophies and techniques including his own sweet corn IPM research, and demonstrate hands -on tools for looking at and managing thresholds for different pest problems. He will also demonstrate and discuss nutrient and water test kits as they pertain to greenhouse operations.

Lambert Mountain Acres is a 200-acre farm with about 30 acres certified organic. The Lamberts are growing blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, many different kinds of greens and vegetables, and award-winning garlic. To extend their growing season, they use a 30 x 96 foot greenhouse with raised beds. Selling to Tuscarora Organic Growers Coop, several local restaurants and at two farmers' markets, they have recently expanded their offerings to include value-added products such as a salsa, wing sauce and garlic pepper jelly.
