Come spend the day with the Organic Mechanic! We’ll start the day looking at potting soils and seed germination media, including traditional and innovative ingredients such as: compost, forest products, coconut husk fiber, worm castings, and rice hulls. Find out why his mix is peat-free. Learn how to mix your own media, discover some of the benefits of premixed media, and learn the ins and outs of successful seed sowing. Whether you're a seasoned grower or an ambitious backyard gardener, you won't want to miss this opportunity. A tour will include both the potting soil operation, and the neighboring Waste Oil Recyclers. Bring your questions and your work gloves!
After focusing his M.S. research on compost and potting soil, Mark Highland, aka The Organic Mechanic, went on to help develop composts to use in creating a unique potting soil for Longwood Gardens, a world renowned, 1050 acre educational botanical garden. In 2006, Mark founded The Organic Mechanic Soil Company, LLC, producing organic, peat-free, earth-friendly potting soils designed to increase soil biological activity and use water efficiently while supporting plant growth.
