Extending the season can be key to greater farm profitability when growing produce. While plastic covered growing tunnels are all the rage to grow crops in the winter, PASA board member Don Kretschmann puts even more effort into growing field crops for winter! By growing crops suited for storage, he’s able to expand his CSA into the winter months, getting a remarkable variety of local produce to his customers in nearly every month. Get a behind the scenes look at an established, successful, organic farm. Hear about the evolution of the operation: from founding members of farmers markets to marketing via subscription, delivering direct to subscribers' neighborhoods. Learn how they've harnessed over 35 years worth of growing experience and experimentation, making deliberate decisions that enable them to fill the food needs of their customers while extending their earning season.
Becky and Don have been providing Pittsburgh area customers with organically grown produce, fruits, and meats since 1971. By cooperating with area farmers and neighbors they assure a steady, varied supply of produce to over 1,100 CSA members while promoting the growth of organic production in Western PA.
