Bike Fresh Bike Local has taken off again across the state, and our opening ride took place with great success on Sunday, June 1st in PASA’s Western Region. The event was a fabulous way to kick-off the season of the three PASA Bike Fresh events being held this year, with Centre and Chester County rides planned for later this summer.
370 cyclists took to the road in support of local food and sustainable agriculture, raising over $15,000 for PASA’s work in western Pennsylvania and a 25% increase from our event last year! Our Event Sponsors provide generous support, critical to the success of this event! Special thanks to Break Away Sponsor East End Food Co-op, Peloton Sponsors Green Mountain Energy, Eat’n Park Restaurants, and Sota Construction Services, Inc., and Cadence Sponsor General Nutrition Centers, Inc. Additional thanks to our returning Event Partners Whole Foods Market (Pittsburgh and Wexford stores) and North Country Brewing who treated cyclists and volunteers to a local foods lunch and craft beer at the post-ride picnic.
This year, Bike Fresh Bike Local Allegheny County cyclists toured 25 and 50 mile routes throughout northern Allegheny and Butler Counties, with rest stops for the riders all hosted by PASA member farms: Dillner Family Farms, Frankferd Farms Foods, and Cool Springs Organic Farm, and a water stop at Harvest Valley Farms. Rest stops were well stocked, thanks to donations from Paragon Foods, NuGo Nutrition, and Apoidea Apiary, along with extra provisions provided by event sponsors East End Food Co-op, Eat’n Park Restaurants, and General Nutrition Centers, Inc. Riders enjoyed live local music at the post-ride picnic, courtesy of the Beagle Brothers.
The success of Bike Fresh Bike Local Allegheny County was a real team effort! The Western Pennsylvania Wheelmen provided extensive in-kind logistical support for the second year in a row by improving and mapping the routes, and organizing ride marshals and support drivers the day of the event. Pro-Bikes, a local bike shop, offered bike technician services at the start of the ride. Thirty additional volunteers including PASA staff, board, members, and community members helped to ensure that the event went smoothly for all!
Bike Fresh Bike Local Allegheny County brings PASA’s work, and the work of our members, to a whole new audience. This year, cyclists received special goody bags containing brochures and information about PASA, sponsors, and member farms on the route.
